Let's be honest about maternity photography.
Some of what's out there is beautiful. Some of it is a lot. Flowing chiffon in a windy field. Hands making a heart on the bump. The partner kissing the bump. The partner looking earnestly at the bump. So much bump-staring.
If that's your thing, genuinely no judgement. But most mums I talk to want something different. They want photos that capture what this time actually felt like, not a styled shoot that'll make their teenager howl with laughter in 2040.
What dates and what doesn't
Trends come for everything, and maternity photography is no exception. The studio setup with dramatic lighting and fabric billowing from a wind machine. The colour-pop maternity dress that matched the nursery theme.
In ten years those photos will scream mid-2020s maternity shoot. Which is fine if that's what you're going for. But if you want photos that feel current no matter when you look at them, the answer is simpler than you think.
The things that never date
Natural light. Your actual home or a quiet outdoor spot you love. Clothes you actually wore when you were pregnant. The dress that was the only thing comfortable, the jumper that stretched just right. No props. No forced posing. Just you, the bump, and whoever else you want in the frame.
The most timeless maternity photos I've taken are the ones where the mum forgot I was there. Sitting on her sofa with her hand resting on her belly. Standing by the nursery window. Laughing at something her partner said. Walking through the park on a route they've done a hundred times.
These aren't maternity photos in the traditional sense. They're photos of a pregnant woman being herself. Which is infinitely more interesting.
Day and time matters
There's this window of light, about an hour before sunset, that photographers call golden hour. It's not a gimmick. Warm, soft, directional light that makes everyone look incredible. If we're shooting outdoors, we plan around it.
Indoors, I work with whatever natural light your home gets. Big windows are great but not essential. Some of my favourite shots have happened in a small bedroom with one window and a sheer curtain. Limitations often make for better photos than perfect conditions.
When to book
Around 30 to 34 weeks. Earlier and the bump might not be pronounced enough. Later and you might feel too uncomfortable to enjoy it. And there's always the chance of an early arrival.
Like newborn sessions, I take bookings months in advance but keep room to flex around dates. Your pregnancy doesn't adhere to a calendar and neither should your photographer.
What to wear
The most flattering thing you can wear is something you already own that makes you feel good.
If you want to buy something, look for a long fitted knit dress that hugs the bump, ribbed fabric photographs beautifully. Or a loose linen shirt over a camisole, unbuttoned at the bottom to show the belly. A soft wrap dress that you can adjust. Even your partner's shirt, oversized on you, a bit undone. Incredibly sweet in photos.
Avoid anything too structured or stiff. You've got enough going on physically without fighting your outfit. And don't feel pressure to bare the bump if you don't want to. Covered, partially covered, completely bare. Whatever feels like you is what will look best.
Partners and siblings
Bring them if you want them. Don't if you don't. There's no rule.
Some of the most touching maternity photos I've taken have been solo. Just a woman and her thoughts, in that quiet space before everything changes. Others have been chaotic and joyful with a toddler climbing on the bump and dad trying to keep everyone from falling over.
Both are valid. Both make for incredible photos. The only wrong choice is forcing something that doesn't feel natural.
What I tell every mum
You're documenting a chapter, not performing it. This isn't about looking like a pregnancy magazine. It's about remembering what it felt like to be you, right now, with this baby inside you and this life around you.
Those are the photos you'll come back to. Not the ones where you were trying to pose.
