If you're reading this, you're probably expecting. Or you've just had a baby and you're googling "newborn photographer near me" at 2am while feeding. Either way, I've got you.
Here's what actually happens, start to finish.
When to book
Before the baby arrives, if you can. I know it feels like tempting fate. But the newborn window is tight. 5 to 14 days after birth is when they're sleepiest and curliest. If you wait until after, you're racing the clock and hoping I have availability.
I take bookings from about 20 weeks onwards. That gives us plenty of time to chat about what you want. I pencil in the session around your due date. Once baby arrives, you let me know and we lock in a specific day. No stress if they're early or late. I keep my schedule flexible around due dates.
How long the session takes
A newborn session is not quick. Plan for two to three hours. I know that sounds long. But most of it isn't shooting.
Babies need feeding. They need changing. They need cuddling. They need to be settled just so. The actual photography is maybe 45 minutes to an hour, broken into chunks. The rest is patience.
This is why I don't rush. If the baby needs a 40-minute feed halfway through, we take a 40-minute break. You have a cup of tea. I wait. The baby sets the pace.
What I bring
I come to you. Your home is where you're comfortable and where the baby is calm. I bring a portable backdrop and soft blankets in neutral tones, a few simple wraps and swaddles in cream, soft grey, and muted blush, and natural-light-friendly kit. No harsh flash, no studio lights. Plus patience. A lot of it.
You don't need to provide anything except a warm room and the baby. Seriously. That's it.
What if the baby won't settle
They will. Eventually. Every baby settles. It's just a question of when and how.
I try feeding first. That usually does it. If not, we swaddle tighter. White noise on my phone. A warmer room. Sometimes just walking with them for five minutes. I've done this enough to know the tricks.
And if they genuinely won't settle? We reschedule. No charge, no fuss. I'd rather come back on a better day than deliver photos of a cranky newborn. I've never actually had to reschedule, but the option is always there.
After the session
A preview within a few days, usually a handful of images so you're not waiting in suspense. The full gallery follows within two weeks. All edited, all high resolution, all yours.
If you've also booked a 3D cast, we usually do that at the same session. The casting takes about 20 minutes per mould, hands or feet. Baby barely notices. The moulding material is room temperature and sets in about two minutes.
The short version
Book early. Clear your morning. Don't stress about a tidy house. I'll work around everything.
